Dump Ubuntu and get Xubuntu
Ubuntu sucks.
Yes, it does. It is slow, buggy and not functional.
At least version 7.04, running on a 2-years-old Acer laptop
Get Xubuntu instead.
Although Xubuntu is based on Ubuntu, it is much lighter on system requirements and far more efficient than Ubuntu with GNOME or KDE.The reason for that is that Xubuntu uses the Xfce Desktop environment, which, according to Olivier Fourdan, creator of Xfce, "Xfce is a lightweight desktop environment for various *NIX systems. Designed for productivity, it loads and executes applications fast, while conserving system resources."
I can testify to that being absolutely true.
They also say that it "makes it ideal for old or low-end machines, thin-client networks, or for those who would like to get more performance out of their hardware."
To which I would add that it is also ideal for those that don't like to sit in front of a computer waiting for it to perform a simple operation.
